I Won’t Bend For You, the second posthumous album by Brian Henry Hooper (Beasts of
Bourbon) is packed with cathartic melodies. Themes of mortality, perseverance, reflection,
along with a beautifully bleak mischievous sense of humour are woven throughout this album,
echoing Hooper’s eventful life. Released almost three years after his passing, this is the
seventh album that will join Hooper’s catalogue. Longstanding musical comrade and friend,
Mick Harvey takes the lead coordinating the production on another Hooper project and
delivers a masterpiece with the full support of Hooper’s wife, Ninevah.
The core team playing with Hooper on the album are Mick Harvey, J.P. Shilo and Dan Tucceri
who recorded together at Adrian Akkerman’s Incubator studio in Melbourne. Recorded at the
end of his days he also has the support and collaboration of longstanding friends, Kim
Salmon, Spencer P. Jones, MJ Halloran and many others. Posthumous work and mixing
continued with Loki Lockwood engineering in close collaboration with Harvey and Shilo.
The album goes a step beyond his previous album, What Would I Know?, revealing a final
period in the musical and personal evolution of the artist, where the darkest and most intimate
melodies intersect, announcing the subsequent outcome, as well as the genius and creativity
of the musical musculature of this group of unique musicians of their kind. Sit back and listen
as Hooper commands your strong allegiance to his final chapter but a beginning to his
musical legacy.
